Your First Contact Lens Fitting: What to Expect

Optometrist teaching a patient how to insert a contact lens at a clinic mirror

A contact lens fitting is a separate service from a glasses exam, because contacts sit directly on the eye and need measurements that a spectacle prescription doesn't include. Here's how the visit goes.

Step 1: the eye exam

First we confirm your prescription and check overall eye health. A glasses prescription can't simply be copied onto a contact lens, because the power changes based on distance from the eye.

Step 2: corneal measurements and tear film check

We measure the curvature and diameter of your cornea and evaluate your tear film. These determine lens base curve, size, and material. Dry eye found here is addressed before fitting, not after.

Step 3: trial lenses

You'll try a lens in the office and we'll watch how it sits, centers, and moves with each blink. Small adjustments are normal and expected.

Step 4: insertion and removal training

If you're new, a team member teaches you to insert, remove, and care for the lenses, and you practice until it feels manageable. Most people get it within one session.

Step 5: the follow-up

You go home with trial lenses and return in a week or two so we can confirm comfort, vision, and corneal health before finalizing the prescription.

The takeaway

Plan on a little extra time for your first fitting, and expect a follow-up. Done properly, the result is lenses you can wear comfortably all day.
