10 Signs Your Child Needs an Eye Exam

Children almost never say "I can't see." They adapt, and the signs show up as behavior instead. Here's what to watch for.

The signs

1. Squinting or tilting the head to see

2. Sitting unusually close to the TV or holding devices near the face

3. Frequent headaches, especially after school

4. Rubbing the eyes often when not tired

5. Covering or closing one eye to read

6. Losing their place while reading, or using a finger to track

7. Avoiding reading, homework, or other near work

8. Short attention span for close-up tasks

9. Trouble catching a ball or clumsiness that seems out of character

10. Grades slipping without another explanation

Why screenings miss these

School and pediatrician screenings mostly test distance acuity. Focusing problems, eye teaming, and tracking issues, the ones that affect reading and attention, can pass a 20/20 screening and still cause real difficulty.

The takeaway

If you recognize two or more of these, book a comprehensive exam. We keep children's visits relaxed and quick, and no Costco membership is required to see us.
